They Were Dreamers

Some from the Netherlands made it alive
Dreaming of freedom to worship and thrive
Chief Massasoit he helped them survive
They were dreamers

Families from Germany fleeing a war
Sent by their King to Canadian shores
Builders of ships in love with the sea
So through my Grandma their strength came to me
They were dreamers

Scottish and Irish blood runs in my veins
Hungry and longing for freedom they came
Bringing the Celtic born reels and refrains
They were dreamers
I’m a dreamer

Don’t turn your back on the dreamers
Dreams make our country strong
Turning your back would be wicked
Welcome them here they belong
Now let the dreamers dream on

All of us carry gifts from those before
They came here hoping their lives could more
We are so lucky they opened the door
for the Dreamers

Let us rejoice that we have common scars
Our families traveled so hard and so far
Black and white, red and brown rainbows we are
We are dreamers, we are dreamers

Don’t turn your back on the dreamers
Dreams make our Country strong
Turning them out would be wicked
Welcome them here they belong
Yes let the dreamers dream on

Don’t turn your back on the dreamers
Dreams make our Country strong
Turning them out would be foolish
Welcome them here they belong
Yes let the dreamers dream on
